Answers to your most commonly asked Hills Honey questions

Collapsible content

What kind of honey is Hills Honey?

Our bees forage in the areas surrounding each of our apiaries. This forage is very diverse. There are wildflowers, orchards, crops, yards, open fields, forests, wet lands and more. The type of pollen and nectar each bee brings in depends on the location of the apiary, what is in bloom and the time of year. This make our honey unique, but not specific to any type of pollen and nectar.

How long does honey last?

If uncontaminated, honey does not go bad. It has natural antibacterial properties that preserve it.

What do I do if my honey crystalizes?

All natural honey will turn solid at some point with granulation or crystallization. To reliquefy, simply place the jar in a container of warm (not hot) water and allow the jar to sit until it is liquid again. Do not allow the water to enter the honey jar for best results.

What does raw honey mean? Is it safe?

Yes, raw honey is safe and contains all of the natural nutrients in honey that can be destroyed by heat.

Raw honey means that our honey has only been strained and has not been heated above 100 degrees during the bottling process. It has not been pasteurized or filtered. It is truly raw honey with all the natural nutrients and very minimally processed to get from the beehive to the bottle.

What is the difference between straining honey and filtering honey?

Filtering

  • Removes very small particles, often down to 1 micron in size, with pressure. Honey is often heated to make it easier to filter. Filtering removes the pollen and other visible impurities, and ensures the honey is consistent and doesn't crystalize. However, filtering can damage the honey's natural composition.

Straining

  • Removes larger particles, usually without pressure. Straining is commonly done to remove wax bits, bee contaminants and other large debris, while retaining pollen and other beneficial qualities. Strained honey is considered less processed than filtered honey.

Honey that is labels as "raw" and/or "unfiltered" has commonly undergone a straining process. Raw honey retains most of the beneficial nutrients and antioxidants that is naturally contains.
